No kids this weekend, so I decided to make a long overdue run to Canterbury Park.
My last trip has been over a month so I've been itching to get back. I made
a decision though, that I think is long overdue. I've given up 2/4 and 3/6 limit.
Although my bankroll dictates that I should be at one of those levels, it just
doesn't make sense any longer. You MUST catch cards in those games, so in
reality it's not even poker. So for me, it's 4/8 or 6/12 from here on out.

So even though I dusted off $250 in my last 4/8 session, I decided to stick with
it and I started at 4/8 LHE early Saturday afternoon. I also put my name on the
4/8 Limit Omaha H/L w/ half-kill list too, but the old men in that game play for like
48 hours sessions so I've NEVER been able to get on that table in the last 6 months
that I've been trying to get on the table. Got called to the 4/8 LHE table and
I was up early on when I won the first 3 pots in the first orbit after sitting down.
One very nice 3-way pot capped PF with AQ when I sucked out and hit my A on the river
cracking both KK and 1010. In my defense, I had the lead on every street and
each guy just called on the J high flop. The guy w/ KK to my left lectured me
a bit, saying.. "playing like that will get you broke, son". I thought for a sec
before responding, "ok, dad". Got into a little friendly spat with a local 4/8 "pro"..
when he was lecturing another player about playing 23 out of position after he won a
giNORMOUS pot with it a couple hand earlier. I got a laugh out of the entire table after
I asked him how much he charged for poker lessons.

SO I was up $150+ after an hour or so.. the table was uber tight and boring so when they
called my name after 3 hours for the 4/8 Omaha table I IMMEDIATELY racked UP and left. I
did play one final interesting hand with A10o in EP.. announced to the table that it was
indeed my last hand and that I was going to be winning it. I raised.. got 3 callers.. flop 10 high.
I Bet-call-call-call. Turn - blank - I bet-call-fold-fold. River K .. bet- guy to my
left says "I know you're bluffing.. I call". I show A10.. he shows AJ for no pair
no draw. He says.. "see I knew you were bluffing" LMAO.. I just chuckle.. rack up
and leave.

Got to the Omaha table.. and as expected, it's filled with a nice mix with 7 old guys
and exactly 1 guy. So I was a bit out of place.. and I figured it would be a rockfest
but I figured what the hell, lets mix it up. I brought all my blue chips to the table
which got some odd looks from everyone, including one old guy who instructed me "we use
yellow chips here.." So I color up my $400.. and that also get some attention from a few
people and the same old guy comments "2 racks?!?! that's a lot of chips there" .. I responded
"yeah.. I like to have ammo" - old guy shakes his head.

I start off playing very tight.. just to check out exactly how everyone's playing, and as I predicted
- it was VERY tight.. with pretty much ONLY the nuts or 2nd nuts being played, except by the one young
guy who had no clue what was going on. He dusted off 3 racks of yellow ($600) in the 1st hour I was
there alone, and called and raised several times with str8's and flushes on paired boards, with no qualifying
low, 3-betting trips on a single suited flop (with no low), turning over hands such as 10 5 7 K rainbow
with pride. To my dismay I couldn't only take advantage of him only twice.. once he rivered a garbage low
on me for half the pot, the other time I won a small pot from him when he just called me to the riv
with 2nd pair (I flopped a set and nut low).

I was up maybe $120 after hour 1 there.. and cruising. Young dude dusted off maybe 1.5 more racks before
throwing in the towel... much to the dismay of EVERYONE at the table who couldn't wait to run some smack
about his play. For being old guys, they were pretty funny.. making comments to the new OLD guy who
took the young dudes seat such as "ohh man.. the kid in that seat before would have capped with that hand"
after he folded top set of A's on the riv when the 3rd flush card hit. Good stuff..
Anyway.. back to the game, now with 8 other rocks at the table, I new it's going to pretty much
be a card catching contest, and unfortunately for me, I missed consistently for the next 5 hours
and dusted off my $120 winnings from the 1st hour, and another $140 on top of that. Mostly on the
1/2 kill pots where I had the nut high, or nut low or nut/nut on the turn only to get 1/2'd or
scooped all together on the river. The rest of the $ I lost just missing flop after flop..
It was so sick, that even the hands I was FOLDING were not catching the flop. I probably could
have played every single hand I was dealt for 6 hours, and flopped maybe 10 or 15 flush draws, open
enders or sets. The only decent pot I won was on a suckout too, when I rivered a boat on
a guy who obviously had the flush on the turn, but I was determined to catch, and I did.
It was a learning experience to be sure, my first experience playing LIVE Omaha.. and it was
fun. I'll definitely do it again, hopefully I'll actually catch some hands next time.
The Fall Classic at canterbury park starts in a few weeks. I'm still hopin to run some sattelites for the preliminary and main events.
